Social Studies is about focusing on the past in order to build a better future for ourselves and our communities. In this class, we will study a range of topics in order for students to learn to make informed decisions and become active and engaged citizens in a culturally diverse society.
These topics include:
History Political Science Geography Psychology Civics Economics Philosophy Sociology Religion
There are a number of activities and items that will be accomplished throughout the course of this class and there will be a strict adherence to the deadlines. It is important to pace yourself and keep up with the activities. For each unit of study there will be: Essential Questions, Vocabulary, Geography, Content Readings and Comprehension Questions, Progress Monitors, Discussions, Cumulative Assessments, and Projects.
Vocabulary The Vocabulary will consist of the terms and concepts you will need to know in order to better understand the readings and content.
Content Reading The content readings and comprehension questions will be the information you need to know about the historical events being covered in this class. Progress Monitors will be any assessments that are used to determine your understanding of the material.
Discussion There will be at least one day set aside for discussions on the topic of study. Discussion is an integral part of the course and allows students to develop and challenge ideas, beliefs, and opinions through critical thinking and reading. Therefore, participation in discussions is critical and required.
Current Events Articles Current Events Articlesrequire you to find an article that was written within the last year about the content we are studying in class, summarize and connect this information to our current unit.
Cumulative and formative assessments Cumulative and formative assessments are the quizzes and tests that will encompass the knowledge you should have obtained from each unit of study.
Projects For the projects, you will have an opportunity to delve deeper into the unit of study. These projects may be done in a group or individually, depending on your academic and behavioral performance.
